What is StubHub?

Selling tickets for sporting events, concerts and the theater has never been easier with the introduction of websites like StubHub on the internet.

StubHub is similar to an online ticket broker, although the site itself neither owns nor sells tickets. Instead it offers a secure location where ordinary people with tickets or those interested in buying tickets can do so from the comfort of their home.

StubHub ensures a guarantee on all tickets on the site and makes a profit by collecting 15% off the sale price of every ticket sold. While 15% may sound steep, the convenience of selling tickets online is priceless.

StubHub Scenario

Let’s see if this sounds familiar: You have two tickets to the “big game.” Best seats in the house. Cool, right? Wrong. Unfortunately for you, you find out your in-laws are coming to town the same day and you have to pick them up from the airport. Bummer, dude! So, you give all your buddies a jingle but none are able to take them off your hands. The stadium is nowhere near the airport, so you have no time to drive down and sell them yourself. What do you do? StubHub to the rescue!

To sell your tickets on StubHub, all you need is an internet connection, credit card, about 5 minutes and of course, the tickets.

What are you Selling?

Once you access StubHub.com, you’ll want to find the “Sell Tickets” icon on the right side of the homepage. Click that and a page will come up asking you what event you are selling tickets for. You can find your event by using the handy-dandy search field or browsing from a selection of sporting events, concerts and theater performances.

After you find your event, make sure the date is correct, highlight it and click “Continue.” Now, you are on your way.

Delivery Options

StubHub will now direct you to a page to provide a little more information on your tickets.

First, StubHub will want to know if you have the tickets in your possession. It is possible to sell your tickets without them on-hand if you are certain you can have them to the buyer before the event, but ideally, the tickets will already be with you.

Next, you will need to decide from one of four different delivery options:

Instant Download
This is the preferred method for StubHub buyers and the easiest for you. With Instant Download, you can either upload your tickets via a PDF file to StubHub or enter the barcodes directly from the tickets during the initial selling process. If Instant Download is available for your tickets, they will be able to be listed until the day of the event, you won’t have to confirm the sale and buyers pay only a $5 fee compared too much heftier costs for other StubHub delivery options.

Electronic Delivery
Similar to Instant Download, Electronic Delivery allows you to keep your tickets on StubHub much longer then alternative delivery options and requires only a $5 fee for the buyer, but you must wait until after the sale to create the PDF file or enter the coordinating barcodes.

FedEx Delivery
If you choose FedEx Delivery, StubHub will create a pre-paid, pre-addressed shipping label to use when shipping the tickets to the buyer. The cost is free to you, but will require anywhere from a $12 to $25 fee for the buyer. Another disadvantage is that with FedEx Delivery, your tickets will not remain on StubHub as long since delivery time will need to be factored in. Instant Download and Electronic Delivery are both recommended over FedEx Delivery, if available.

Last Minute Services (LMS)
This method requires that you provide your tickets to the LMS Team. If the tickets sell, the buyer picks them up just before the event for a $15 charge. Ideally your tickets will have sold on StubHub before this is necessary, but it is good to have options all the way until the end.

Ticket Details

Once you have chosen your preferred delivery method, StubHub will request a little more information about your tickets, such as quantity and whether you want to sell the tickets in pairs of two, or split them in odd numbers. Most likely you will want to sell in even increments; otherwise you may find yourself with only one ticket left, which could be a hard sell.

Further down the page, an area is provided where you can describe the location of the tickets, or offer any other information you think could be beneficial to the sale such as free parking, VIP privileges or stadium or venue promotions. Be creative here if you think it might help.

Price your Tickets

Now it is time to decide what you think your tickets are worth, or at the very least how much you think you can sell them for on StubHub.

First you must choose whether you want the price to be fixed or declining. If you choose fixed, the price will not change, unless you personally change it, from the time you enter it during the initial process. With a declining price, StubHub will lower your ticket price as the event date draws closer in order to keep it competitive with other sellers. You can set a minimum price for your tickets that StubHub will not drop below.

Determining your price is completely up to you, but StubHub has tools to help you if necessary. By clicking the “Sold” button you can see what similar tickets for the event have already sold for and price your tickets accordingly or click the “Unsold” button to see what your current competitors are asking for. StubHub provides diagrams and maps to give you an idea of what tickets are selling for throughout the venue.

Choosing your price is probably the most important part of selling your tickets on StubHub. Don’t be greedy. However, you will want to get at least face value in return. It is possible you may have to cut your losses and ask for much less in order to avoid walking away with nothing.

After you have determined a price, StubHub will provide you with a list of dates to sell your tickets by, including the latest possible sale date.

Real StubHub Reviews

Upload Tickets

This screen only appears if you selected Electronic Delivery or Instant Download. If you chose either of those delivery options, you will need to upload the PDF file of your tickets or manually enter the barcodes.

StubHub provides step-by-step instructions for either method. Once you have successfully uploaded your tickets, a check mark will appear to notify you.

When the check mark is evident on your screen, click the "Continue" button to move on to the next step in selling your tickets.

Payment Options

Now comes the fun part where you decide how you would like StubHub to pay you after your tickets are sold. The site offers three convenient options: PayPal, check or charitable donation.

If you select PayPal or check, you will need to provide a current shipping address. Once you have entered a shipping address, review it on the right side of the page. If you notice any errors, click the "Edit" link at the bottom.

Charitable donations are delivered in your name by StubHub to a charity of choice.

After you have decided on your preferred payment option, you will need to provide a valid credit card. StubHub asks for this as part of their guarantee to hold sellers accountable for their listings.

You can list as many major credit cards (Visa, Master Card, American Express) as you like. Make sure the corresponding billing address is correct. If you notice an error, click the "Edit" link at the bottom to make any necessary changes.

Once all shipping, billing and payment information is entered correctly, click the "Continue" button at the bottom of the screen.

Review

At this point you should have provided all the necessary information about your tickets, decided on a delivery method, price and your preferred payment option. Take your time to review that all of the information you have entered on StubHub is correct.

If everything looks kosher, you can go ahead and click the "List Tickets" link at the bottom of the screen. And ....

That's it, folks! Your tickets are now available for purchase to the StubHub customer base. You can constantly, compulsively check the status of your tickets and make any changes to the listing from the "My Account" link at the top of the StubHub homepage. But try to be patient. Good things come to those who wait, and you don't want to drop your price too early.

As soon as your tickets do sell, StubHub will notify you via e-mail with the necessary instructions. If you chose Instant Download, there is nothing more you need to do and StubHub will send your payment once the tickets have been uploaded by the buyer.

If you chose Electronic Delivery or FedEx Delivery, you will need to follow the instruction from StubHub before receiving your payment.

Personal StubHub Experience

I have been selling tickets on StubHub for over two years now. As a season ticket holder for the Milwaukee Brewers, there are many games I am unable to attend, some on short notice. I have never not sold tickets I listed on StubHub and thus far by using the competitive pricing features, I have received at least face value if not a small profit on some of the more marquee games.

While the 15% seller fee is unfortunate, it is better than receiving nothing at all for the tickets and watching them go to waste. I would definitely recommend StubHub if you are unable to find a friend, family member or coworker interested in your tickets.

  • Trusted Source
  • Multiple Buyers
